Monardus / Book of Monardus – “Monardus” is the Latin form of Monardes (c. 1512-1588), a Spanish botanist and physician who published a number of botanical works. The specific one to which Hariot refers was titled in English as “Ioyfull newes out of the newfound world wherein are declared the rare and singular vertues of diuers and sundrie herbes,” which was published in England in either 1577 or 1580, according to Early English Books Online. Thus, Hariot would likely have been familiar with its contents and, because he refers to it twice, would expect his audience to recognize the name, at least. - Matt
